In the United States, ice hockey has become a popular sport among children and adults. Whether for school or for a family weekend activity, hockey is greatly played all over Northern America. Although it is a very popular sport, there are still beginners who are still not quite out there in the hockey world.

In this article, we aim to provide tips for aspiring hockey players on how to become a better hockey player. Most tips are very common but often neglected; we aim to emphasize on each item of this simple hockey player guide.

General Tips

  • Skate properly.

First and foremost, you cannot survive a hockey game if you do not know how to skate. You have to learn how to skate in the right manner. Regardless of what position you play in the game, you will have to be equipped with the proper skating skills, otherwise you cannot participate or if you do, you might bring your team down.

Don’t worry if you have 0 skills in skating, you can always practice with friends or get lessons for it before joining a hockey game.

  • Make sure you know and understand the rules.

Knowing and understanding the rules of the sport is one major step towards becoming a good player. You must understand the do’s and dont’s in the game; as much as possible, follow the rules in order to avoid penalties.

  • Make sure all your equipment are the right size and of good quality.

When you hit the ice, it’s very important for you to be comfortable. Whether it’s your shoulder pad, helmet, stick or skate–all of these must be the right size or length for you in order for you to be able to play at your best condition.

  • Practice passing and shooting.

Practice makes perfect or so they say; although practice might not really make your performance perfect, it still does help a lot.

It’s important to practice your passing and shooting moves when you have some free time. You can ask your friends to play and practice with you to sharpen your skills as a team.

  • Don’t be greedy and pass the puck to your teammates.

Especially when passing is needed, do so. Keep in mind that hockey is not a one-man show; it’s a family sport and it’s supposed to be played as a team.

  • Keep your head up and don’t look behind.

Whenever you’re going into the boards, make sure you keep your head up in order to avoid any serious and fatal injury in case somebody hits you from behind. Also, while you’re playing, it’s best to not keep on checking people behind. Just focus on what’s in front.

Other Tips

  • When not in the rink, observe what the opposite team is doing or how they’re playing.
  • Prepare yourself to play defensively and offensively.
  • Be prepared to fall every once in awhile.
  • Handle your stick properly; try your best to not hit anyone with it.
